Injury Report...

I had to ride some of the day standing up because my butt hurt so bad, not the easiest thing to do!

The sore on my butt is getting bigger so I had to cut a bigger hole out of my saddle.

Injury Report...

When I get into a groove I tend to forget about the pain. When I think I can ride faster than I have before my competitiveness comes out and all I can think about is riding fast. It’s to bad I can’t get into that groove everyday.

Injury Report...

The knot in my glute that I had in New York is starting to come back. I think it might have something to do with the saddle I am using. It seemed to get better when I switched saddles but my other saddle doesn’t have enough padding for me to cut a whole out for my saddle sore. Again, I feel like I can’t win.

Injury Report...

You’re not going to believe this but the fungus has started to come back. I just can’t catch a break. This time I am not stopping. When the going gets tough, the tough keep riding.

Injury Report...

You can see by yesterday’s picture that I have quite the saddle sore. Put that with 25 miles of cracked bumpy roads and it is torture. I just try and put my focus on other things and fight thru the pain. Mind over matter!

Injury Report...

If a picture says a thousand words than tell me what this next picture tells you.

I e-mailed an ultra cyclist and told him the problem that I was having with saddle sores. His suggestion was to cut a hole out of my saddle the size of the sore so that it doesn’t rub on the saddle. I didn’t want to cut my new saddle so I put my old one back on. By looking at the size of the whole I cut out you can get an idea of how big the sore is. It helps a little but that is about it. His other suggestion was to ride standing up and I tried that for an hour. My legs were burning. Sometimes I feel like I can’t catch a break.

Injury Report...

I finally decided to try a different saddle.

It doesn’t look comfortable does it? I can’t tell if it is better or worse. My butt is so bad that everything hurts.

Injury Report...

It still hurts. The worst part is stopping and then starting again so I just keep on pedaling.

This is the seat, cyclists call them saddles. This is the saddle that I had been riding for about 7000 miles. When I bought it about a month before the trip the sales person at the bike shop said that if I didn’t like it to bring it back and try something different. It wasn’t comfortable from the start but I kept thinking I would get used to it. I hadn’t. After 7000 plus miles of trying I finally gave up and bought a new one. Words of advice: “If something doesn’t feel right, don’t force it for 7000 miles. Try something different”.

Injury Report...

I've come to the conclusion that it is going to hurt the rest of the way. I am mentally focused again and am able to make it through the pain. Again, I have my eye on the prize.

Since I embarrassed myself with my fat picture I thought I would show you what I looked like July 1st. What a difference hard work and a nice tan can do.

Injury Report...

I don't have anything new to report. It hurts to sit, so I decided to show you some photos of my first major bicycle crash. I had been riding for about a month. Still riding the borrowed bike. It was raining and cold. My hands were numb and I was going down a hill. I hit a bump and lost my grip on my handle bars. I fell so hard I broke my helmet. I was out of it for a few moments. The bike seemed OK so I got back on and rode about 30 miles more. I didn't even know that my elbow was split open until I got to camp and took my jacket and shirt off.
I had a concusion and got my elbow stiched up. I was scared of going down hills for a while after that.

Injury Report...

It hurts to sit but I just keep on pedaling. I am going to try and make the blog more exciting, so here you go.Even though this might embarrass me a bit, I want you to have an idea of what I looked like April 1, 2007. This picture was taken about a month after I started riding. I planned the 12,000 mile bicycle trip last year and I didn’t start riding until March 5, 2007. Before March 5th, I had only been on a bicycle one time in the last 18 years. I was not a cyclist when I started riding, but I had a goal and a dream. I didn’t have my own bicycle yet so I borrowed one from a friend that my dad rode with. When got home after riding 30 minutes I was thinking, “What have I gotten myself into”? Remember this picture was taken after I had already been training for a month.

You would think after 7500 miles my butt would be used to sitting on a bike. It is not. It hates me.

Injury Report...

All it takes is a few hours back on the bike and all the pain comes back. I think it will take a month off of the bike before it feels comfortable again.

Injury Report...

I am itching to get back on the bike. I’m starting to miss the pain. Besides it’s easier to ride than to work on yourself.

Injury Report...

While my body is starting to feel better my mind is scattered. Riding 12,000 miles is both physical and mental. You can’t be strong in one if you’re not strong in the other.
